New Zealanders 13-24 years are leaving Facebook
/UPDATE: Tuesday 29th Jan 2012 More evidence the NZ Facebook user base is shrinking
I'm reviewing recent Facebook statistics for New Zealand on SocialBakers for an in-house workshop we're running this afternoon and this graph made me think.
On the graph below you can see that the biggest gain in the last 3 months was recorded by the age group of 45-54.
Over the last three months more than 12,000 13-15 year olds have left Facebook. Over 5,000 16-17 year olds have left and about 2,000 18-24 year olds.
Our social networking statistics show that Facebook penetration in New Zealand is 53.82% compared to the country's population and 63.12% in relation to number of Internet users. The total number of FB users in New Zealand is reaching 2288460 and grew by more than 112240 in the last 6 months.
Questions that need answering:
- Is this a trend or a blip?
- Are they leaving because more parents and older family members are following them?
- Are younger people concerned about privacy and thus moving to anonymous social networks?
- What networks are they moving too?
